Aridity Index (AI)
A ratio of mean annual precipitation to mean annual potential evapotranspiration. It shows how dry or humid a region is and is used to assess water availability for vegetation and classify dryland zones. Association of Southeast Asian Nations Climate Outlook Forum (ASEANCOF)
a collaborative platform where National Meteorological and Hydrological Services from Southeast Asian nations develop consensus-based seasonal climate outlooks and related information. It aims to support decision-making for managing climate-related risks and promoting sustainable development in the region.

Average Annual Loss (AAL)
A multi-annual loss average, like an insurance premium, i.e., it quantifies an annual loss that, in the long term, accumulates to the total amount of losses that will be caused by disasters to the infrastructure. It is a multi-hazard metric as well.

A measure of annualized future losses over the long term, derived from probabilistic risk models. The AAL provides an estimator of losses that are likely to occur every year due to a specific hazard

Average duration of a drought event (SMA-1) - Existing climate
Average duration of a drought event in days as defined by the SMA-1 indicator (Standardised Moisture Anomaly cumulated on a 1-month window) a consecutive series of days below -1 in present climate conditions.

The existing climate refers to the entire historical period of the last 40 years (1979 - 2016) the methodology employed for the computation is exhaustively explained in the Background paper.

There are reference periods for the existing climate and for the future scenarios the average duration is computed over such periods in a statistical sense (for future years from 2060 to 2100 are considered). The definition of the indicator is a series of consecutive days where the used indicator is below -1.
